Image to Text (OCR)

Read text from images with OCR.

How to extract text from an image

  1. Choose the language of the text. English is selected by default.
  2. Drop an image on the box, click to pick one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. You can add several images; they are read in order and the text is joined together.
  3. Watch the progress bar. When it finishes, the text appears in the box on the right, where you can correct it.
  4. Copy the text to the clipboard or download it as a .txt file.

What OCR is good for

  • Screenshots: copy text from an error message, a video frame or a chat without retyping it.
  • Documents: turn photos of letters, notes, receipts and book pages into editable text.
  • Accessibility and search: make text inside images searchable or readable by a screen reader.

Tips for accurate results

  • Crop the image to the text you need. Busy backgrounds and logos can confuse the engine.
  • Take photos straight on, in even light, and avoid shadows across the page.
  • Very small text reads better when the image is larger; a phone photo at full resolution beats a thumbnail.
  • Always proofread numbers, names and email addresses before you use them.

Private OCR that runs on your device

This tool uses Tesseract, a well known open source OCR engine, compiled to run inside your web browser. The engine and language files download once from a public CDN and are cached; your images are processed locally and never uploaded. There are no page limits, no sign-up and no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded for OCR?

No. The OCR engine is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Your image is never sent to a server, so screenshots of private chats, invoices or IDs stay on your device.

Why does the first scan take longer?

On the first scan your browser downloads the OCR engine and the language data, a few megabytes in total. Both are cached, so later scans in the same language start almost at once.

How can I get more accurate text?

Use a sharp, well lit image where the text is at least 20 pixels tall, crop away unrelated areas and pick the right language. Straight, high contrast text such as a screenshot gives the best results; handwriting is not supported well.

Can I read text in two languages at once?

Yes. Pick the main language and tick "Also read English" to recognise documents that mix English with another language, such as Hindi or Spanish.

What does the confidence score mean?

It is the engine's own estimate of how sure it is about the recognised words, from 0 to 100. Scores above 85 usually mean clean text; lower scores suggest checking the result against the image.
