Count words, characters and reading time
Paste an essay, a blog post, a product description or a social media caption and the counter shows the number of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs straight away. It also estimates how long the text takes to read and to say out loud, which helps when you plan a talk, a podcast script or a video voice-over.
Why the numbers matter
- SEO: meta descriptions read best under about 160 characters and titles under 60. Long-form articles that rank often sit between 1,200 and 2,500 words.
- Social media: X allows 280 characters per post and LinkedIn shows about 210 before "see more".
- School and work: essays, abstracts and applications often have a strict word limit.
Keyword density
The keyword table lists your most used words, leaving out common filler words such as "the" and "and". If one word takes a very large share of the text, consider using synonyms so the writing stays natural for readers and search engines.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is any run of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation, so "e-mail" counts as one word and "don't" as one. This matches how most editors and word processors count.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or video.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser. Your text is not uploaded, stored or logged. You can even use the counter offline once the page has loaded.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word appears compared with the total number of words. The table lists your most used words (common filler words left out) with their count and share of the text.
