Audit image alt text on any page
Alt text describes an image for people who use screen readers and for search engines, which cannot see pictures. It is one of the simplest accessibility wins and helps images rank in Google Images. This tool lists every image on a page with its alt text, so you can spot gaps in seconds instead of opening the source code.
What is reported for each image
- Alt text status: missing, empty (decorative) or present, with warnings for alt text that is very long, repeats the file name or starts with "image of".
- Image address: from src, srcset, picture sources or lazy-load attributes, resolved to a full URL with a thumbnail.
- Width and height attributes: missing dimensions cause layout shift while the page loads.
- Loading hints: loading="lazy", decoding and fetchpriority, so you can check that the main image is not lazy loaded by mistake.
Writing better alt text
Describe the content and the purpose of the image in a short sentence. A product photo might read "Blue canvas backpack with brown leather straps", while a chart needs the key figure it shows. Logos that link home can use the brand name. Icons next to text that already says the same thing, and purely decorative shapes, should have an empty alt so screen readers skip them.
Filter the list to missing alt, fix those first, then review empty ones to confirm they are truly decorative. Download the CSV to hand the list to whoever edits the content, or to compare before and after a fix.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a missing alt and an empty alt?
A missing alt attribute is an error: screen readers may read out the file name instead. An empty alt (alt="") is correct for purely decorative images, because it tells assistive technology to skip them. The tool marks missing alt in red and empty alt in amber so you can decide.
How long should alt text be?
Describe what the image shows and why it matters on the page, usually in under 125 characters. Avoid starting with "image of" and do not stuff keywords; write what you would say to someone who cannot see the picture.
Why does the tool check width and height?
When an image has width and height attributes, the browser reserves space before it loads, so the page does not jump. That reduces Cumulative Layout Shift, one of the Core Web Vitals.
Does it find lazy-loaded images?
Yes. Besides src and srcset it reads the common lazy-loading attributes such as data-src, data-lazy-src, data-original and data-srcset, so images that a script swaps in later are still listed.
Are background images included?
No. CSS background images cannot carry alt text, so they are not part of an alt text audit. Use the Website Scraper to list background images found in a site's stylesheets.
