Scan and grade your HTTP security headers
Security headers are short instructions your server sends with every page. They tell the browser to always use HTTPS, which scripts are allowed to run, whether the page may be framed by other sites and how much information to leak to other websites. They cost nothing, work in every modern browser and block whole classes of attacks such as cross-site scripting, clickjacking and protocol downgrades. This checker requests your page, grades the headers from A+ to F and tells you exactly what to add.
What the scan covers
- Content-Security-Policy: checks for unsafe-inline, unsafe-eval, wildcards and missing object-src and base-uri.
- Strict-Transport-Security: max-age length, includeSubDomains and preload readiness.
- Clickjacking: X-Frame-Options or the CSP frame-ancestors directive.
- Hardening headers: X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy, Permissions-Policy and the cross-origin policies COOP, CORP and COEP.
- Leaks and hygiene: server version numbers, X-Powered-By, cookies without Secure, HttpOnly or SameSite, a missing HTTP to HTTPS redirect and outdated headers.
A transparent score
Each header has a fixed weight and the result table shows how many points it earned and why, so you always know which change moves the grade. Strong values get full points, weak values part of them, and a missing header none. Penalties for leaks, cookies and redirects are listed separately.
Fixing the headers
Every header comes with a recommended value you can copy, and the snippet generator writes the missing ones for nginx, Apache, Cloudflare Transform Rules, a _headers file for Netlify or Cloudflare Pages, and vercel.json. Roll out a Content-Security-Policy in report-only mode first, and only add HSTS preload once every sub-domain serves HTTPS. Share the result link with your developer or export the full report as JSON.
Frequently asked questions
How is the grade calculated?
Nine headers carry points that add up to 100: Content-Security-Policy 25, Strict-Transport-Security 20, frame protection 15, X-Content-Type-Options 10, Referrer-Policy 10, Permissions-Policy 10, Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy 5, Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy 3 and Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy 2. Weak values earn part of the points. Information leaks, insecure cookies and a missing HTTP to HTTPS redirect subtract points. A+ needs 95 or more with a strong CSP and HSTS, A needs 80, B 65, C 50 and D 35.
Which security headers matter most?
Strict-Transport-Security forces HTTPS, Content-Security-Policy limits which scripts may run and is the strongest defence against cross-site scripting, and frame protection stops clickjacking. X-Content-Type-Options and Referrer-Policy are one-line fixes that every site should have.
Will adding a Content-Security-Policy break my site?
It can, because it blocks scripts, styles and frames that are not on the allow list. Start with Content-Security-Policy-Report-Only, watch the browser console or a report endpoint, add the sources your site really needs, then switch to the enforcing header.
Is X-XSS-Protection still needed?
No. Modern browsers removed the XSS auditor, and the old "1; mode=block" setting could even be abused in some browsers. Remove the header or set it to 0, and rely on a Content-Security-Policy instead.
Why does the checker see different headers than my browser?
The page is requested from Cloudflare's network without cookies. Sites that add headers only for logged-in users, or that serve bots a different response, can show different results. Results are cached for 60 seconds.
Where do I add these headers?
In your web server (nginx add_header, Apache Header set), at your CDN (Cloudflare Transform Rules), or in your host's config file (_headers on Netlify and Cloudflare Pages, vercel.json on Vercel). The snippet generator gives you each format.
